1. What is urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence (leakage) refers to the involuntary loss of urine from the bladder that is problematic for a person. Click here for more information.

2. What is pelvic organ prolapse?

This term refers to relaxation of the support structures to the pelvic organs including the top of the vagina, uterus, bladder, and rectum. Generally these conditions occur from injury to the support structures during vaginal childbirth, but may occur in patients who have not had children. Other common factors that can influence whether prolapse occurs include obesity, genetics (heredity), lung disease, and prior surgeries.

3. What is a urogynecologist?

A urogynecologist is a specialized physician who undertook extra training in female urology and reconstructive pelvic surgery called a fellowship. Generally these physicians have completed a 4 year OB/GYN residency and a 2 or 3 year fellowship.

4. What is minimally invasive surgery?

This is a term used to describe surgeries with smaller incisions and either a short (less than 1 day), or no (outpatient surgery) hospital stay.

6. Is surgery the only option for incontinence and prolapse?

No, depending on the type of incontinence and the severity of prolapse, non-surgical options could be appropriate including medicine, physical therapy, or a pessary.

7. At which hospitals do Dr. McBride and Dr. Hammer work?

Dr. McBride and Dr. Hammer have privileges at multiple hospitals where they perform surgeries and sees patients. This includes Saint Joseph Hospital, Lutheran Medical Center, Rose Medical Center, Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center, Presbyterian / St. Luke’s Medical Center, Avista Hospital and Swedish Medical Center in Englewood Colorado.

8. If I am referred to Dr. McBride or Dr. Hammer, will I still be able to see my primary Ob/Gyn?

Yes, Dr. McBride and Dr. Hammer work closely with your referring OB/Gyn and will often operate with your doctor if that is needed at the hospital at which you are most comfortable.

9. Can I get my annual gynecologic exam at Mountain States Urogynecology?

Yes, Nurse Practitioner Cindy Aspromonte provides general gynecologic care and Pap smears at the Midtown office in Denver.
